On
May 13, 2009, the Municipality of Santos held a public
hearing to present its environmental project for the
remediation of the former Alemoa landfill. The meeting
was held in the Ulysses Guimaraes chamber on Rua XV
de Novembro in the annex of the municipal offices.
The
project is being produced by Brasil Terminal Portuário.
The company signed a lease agreement with Codesp to
build a new terminal for loading and unloading.
During
the meeting, the company's officers presented details
of all phases of construction work, and emphasized the
challenge of cleaning up to 342,000 square meters of
land degraded by years of inappropriate use.
Members
of the municipality's Standing Environment Committee,
council members Fabio Nunes (PSB), Arlindo Barros (PSDB)
and Adilson Júnior (PT). The Commission for Port
Affairs consists of local council members Manoel Constantino
(PMDB), Telma de Souza (PT) and Fabio Nunes (PSB) who
chaired the discussions. In addition to members of the
council, the hearing included representatives of entities
related to the port sector and the environment.
Based
on case studies, such as construction of sports complexes
for the 2012 London Olympics, where the improper use
of the area was very similar to Alemoa, the decontamination
technology used was "washing" the topsoil.
The site will be divided, and excavated material will
be sifted, separated and washed with equipment imported
from Belgium.
This
process will tend to separate soil from toxic chemicals,
with the reuse of approximately 70%. The other 30% will
be made into a kind of paste that will be taken to controlled
landfills.
"All
Brasil Terminal Portuário's work is committed
to erase [the effects of] over three decades dumping
garbage and toxic components of different kinds,"
said council member Fabio Nunes, aka Professor Fabião,
who is also a biologist.
