BTP
- Brasil Terminal Portuário S / A was founded
in January 2007 for the specific purpose of building
and subsequently operating port facilities on a leased
area in the Organized Port of Santos. Its parent company,
Europe Terminal NV, based in Antwerp, Belgium, with
over 20 years experience in port operations, is directly
involved in building and operating port terminals in
Belgium, Spain, Turkey, Italy, Russia and France, and
handles approximately 50 million containers per year.
BTP
is based in the city of Santos and has its own team
of experienced professionals specializing in the Planning,
Engineering, Environment and Administrative Management,
who are responsible for sustainable development at all
stages of the project with support from reputable consultants
in various fields.
The
following are the project's basic assumptions: economic
feasibility; remediation of the former landfill area
of Alemoa-Porto to revive its role as a port; respect
for the environment; operational safety and efficiency;
hiring local labor and services - as components that
will reach higher productivity levels through coordinated
action,.
BTP's
development will be implemented in 2 phases; the first
one will enable the terminal to handle around 1.1 million
TEUs. The operational stage will create around 1,500
direct jobs and another 9,000 indirect ones. Between
construction works, equipment, remediation and environmental
reports, the total investment in the terminal will reach
R$ 1.6 billion, making it one of the world's most modern
facilities, offering world-class services, and leveraging
all the competitive factors provided by the Organized
Port of Santos.
The
terminal will be located in an area that has been used
for disposal of waste from the Port of Santos for over
50 years, causing the contamination of approximately
680,000 m3 of soil, which BTP will now be treating and
decontaminating before building the new terminal.
This
pioneering effort in Brazil will help ensure a solution
for one of the largest environmental problems in the
state of Sao Paulo, allowing the area to be used for
an unprecedented development in the port sector in terms
of its socioeconomic and environmental sustainability.
